Patchwork in India is inseparable from the ethic of jugaad. Nothing wasted, everything repurposed. Across communities, it was a practice of necessity that became art. Salvaging worn cloth into something new and meaningful. Patchwork pieces were made for weddings, gifted at births, and passed down as heirlooms. Each patch carrying memory of the garment it came from. In Rajasthan, even today women gather collectively to stitch, making it a social and oral tradition as much as a textile one.
